BUFFALOSTYLE TAKE NINETEEN One of the strongest and most constant complaints heard here in WNY relates to the drain of young people from our region.

To help combat this negativity, this week on Buffalostyle we’ll celebrate some of the terrific young men and women who are living here, dreaming here and accomplishing here.

Bruce Fortson and Catherine Ejimadu are two 19 year old college students who have spent the better part of the last year developing develop a monthly magazine called, Under The Scope. Stating their ultimate purpose as “…making Buffalo a better place…” their new publication will be geared toward young adults aged 16-26 who reside in the urban communities throughout Western New York. It will highlight Buffalo’s inner-city youth and young adults and their talents, as well as promote education and sports programs in high schools and colleges in and around the city.

buffalostyle_under_the_scope.jpgUnder the Scope will also keep the community informed on local events and activities and will publish the views and ideas of local youths, giving voice to those who rarely get the chance publicly expressing their opinions.

Plans call for premiere issue to be distributed throughout the City’s high schools, college campuses and surrounding suburbs in September, followed by an increase to 5,000 copies in October, and 10,000 copies in November. The long range plan involves distribute 10,000 free issues throughout the city during the first week of every month.

This week’s Buffalostyle music will be live in-studio, performed by a snazzy jazz quartet who call themselves, From All Directions. This is one talented group who will keep your toes tappin’ throughout the hour….and oh yeah…. their remarkable professional sound is even more remarkable when you realize that these four accomplished musicians are only teenagers, all recent graduates from the Williamsville School System.

So surf on in to Buffalostyle Tuesday, August 7 from 7 to 8 pm at http://www.wnymedia.net. Listen live and call in at 886-9696. Or listen later and send me an e-mail with your thoughts at buffalostyle@wnymedia.net.

Buffalostyle Take 18 Podcast

[ Recorded. Listen below ]48hrflmpjt.jpg

Come on….admit it….

You’ve stood in front of the mirror and imagined yourself as Brad or Angelina.

You’ve sashayed around as if strolling down the red carpet with paparazzi popping their bulbs for you.

There’s absolutely no doubt in your mind that given the chance, you could win the Oscar for best actor/actress/director of the year.

Well, my friends, your moment in that movie spotlight has finally arrived in the form of the 48 Hour Film Project.

Beginning at 7pm on August 10th, Buffalo will be awash with teams of area filmmakers and their crews, putting together movies that must be completed in 48 hours. The commonality among these celluloid masterpieces will be assigned genres, a character, a prop and a meaningful line of dialogue, all of which must be used somewhere in each movie. The beauty of the competition is that there are no boundaries as to who can compete….all that’s needed is a team and a dream.

Upon completion, all films will be screened at the Buffalo 48 Hour Film Project Festival to be held at the Market Arcade on Wednesday Thursday, August 15-16. A winner will be chosen from area entrees and that film will enter into the National 48 Hour Film Festival (Filmapalooza) with the chance of winning the top prize of $7500 and the possibility of international screenings at movie festivals, including the illustrious Cannes.

So release your inner movie star longings and join me on tonight’s Buffalostyle as I interview the national organizers of the 48 Hour Film Project and some of the WNY’ers who are jumping into this celluloid fray. You’ll hear all about the competition and how to participate …..and you can call in with your own questions at 886-9696.

Who knows…that Oscar of your dreams may finally be coming your way.

Everything….

July 27, 2007

I know that Michael Buble may not be everyone’s ideal of a musical performer, but I absolutely love his song, Everything.

It is the ultimate summer fun song….finger snappin’, toe poppin’ beat and completely about being in love with that one special person….

Add in one Lake Erie sunset and you’ve got perfection!

PODCAST: Buffalostyle Take 17

July 22, 2007

[ Previously Recorded.  Listen to Podcast below]

Get up.

Go to work.

Come home.

Garden or shovel (depending on season.)

buffalostyle-caribbean_thumbnail.jpgMeet family and social obligations.

Go to bed.

Get up and repeat.

For most of us, that’s pretty much the routine of life.

And while we might dream about escaping from it all…you know the talk…chucking the job and the house and sailing away, free and easy….. few of us ever find the courage to walk the walk.

Meet Karen Pieters and Dave Burnell—a 40-something WNY husband and wife who recently sold their lovely home, gave up their corporate jobs, traded in their Beamer for a pick-up truck, and downsized their possessions to a level that most of us would deem painful. And this November the adventurous duo will set out on a yacht, which they have salvaged and restored, with the compass set for the crystal blue Caribbean. There they will spend a year, or maybe more, experiencing a life of which most of us only dream.

Join me on this week’s Buffalostyle to learn more about this unique WNY couple and how they’ve managed to transition their lives from routine to remarkable. Who knows….they may just inspire you to go after that special dream you’ve had secreted away in your own heart and soul.

To help set the mood, WNY’s own Randy Milligan (http://www.randymilligan.com/) will be live, in-studio, strumming some Caribbean get-away tunes.

So pour yourself a pina colada and tune in to BUFFALOSTYLE…LIVE TUESDAY 7 TO 8PM…OR LATER …. AT WNYMEDIA.NET

Here’s Your Chance

July 16, 2007

So Buffalo and Western New York have officially been declared one of the worst places for singles to live and date??!!!  Somehow I find that hard to believe.

However, after watching a few episodes of WNY Matchmaker Patti Novak's national TV series, Confessions of A Matchmaker (filmed, of course, in the Queen City) I'm starting to get the feeling that we just might be living in a vast wasteland of wandering singles unable to connect.

So I'm calling on the WNY Media audience of readers and listeners to come to the rescue.  Let me know if you are dating or using a dating service, either locally or on line.  How's it going? Is it tough?  Are there good people out there to meet for coffee and/or dinner?  Or is it just a meat market with a roll in the sack the ultimate end-of-the-date-night goal?

I'm looking for a few good men and women to come on Tuesday's Buffalostyle and talk to me about Queen City Dating….the good, the bad and the ugly.  And if you're in the market for a date….maybe we can help fix you up….

E-mail me at buffalostyle@wnymedia.net or just write your story in the comment section below.  If it's a good tale….we may be talking….

Buffalostyle Moves to Cable

July 13, 2007

After just 14 shows, Buffalostyle has been invited to become a regular part of the Time Warner Cable Network's Crossroads Show.

Host Peter Anderson has invited me to appear on the last Thursday of each month to talk about Buffalostyle and showcase guests from some of the shows.

If you are interested in putting faces with the names, tune into Crossroads on the last Thursday of each month at 3 pm, or any of the other times that the show repeats throughout the weekend (for times check out www.timewarnercable.com/wny/programming/twc13.html)

On the next show, July 26, Erie County District Attorney Lisa Rodwin and I will join Peter to talk about a new website, "2smart4u.com" that was created to give teens information on how to surf and connect on the web and protect their personal safety and their lives.

Lisa joined me on Buffalostyle on July 10 to talk about the rash of sexual predators seeking to harm young children that have surfaced recently in WNY.  It was an excellent program filled with helpful information.  If you're interested, check out the podcast for Buffalostyle Version Fifteen.

BUFFALOSTYLE TAKE 15

July 9, 2007

buffalstyle-15-cac-image.jpg[Previously recorded, Podcast at bottom - Listen Now]

It’s a phrase innocently invoked when an unthinkably heinous crime invades a community.

                           “That could never happen here.”

Yet even across WNY we are coming to realize that we no longer enjoy the guarantee of safe and secure neighborhoods in which to raise our families.

Just in the last month, two men have been charged with sexually abusing and stalking young children in the well respected communities of Amherst and Springville.  Details of these incidents, and others like them, have been shocking and disturbing; especially for a region that has long prided itself as family-safe-and-friendly.

The good news is that collaborative efforts among WNY government agencies, service agencies and private citizens are helping to fight against these unthinkable crimes and the criminals committing them.  Together these dedicated organizations and individuals are reaching out and helping child victims of sexual crimes and their families—and in the process they are setting a new standard for childhood sexual abuse prosecution and protection in New York State and beyond.

buffalostyle-lisarodwin-pic.jpgTuesday’s Buffalostyle will feature three women, all of whom are standing front and center in the fight against violent and sexual abuse of children:

Lisa Bloch Rodwin, Chief of the Erie County District Attorney’s

Domestic Violence Bureau and co-founder of the, It Happened to  Alexa Foundation, which provides funding to families of Child Abuse and Sexual  Assault Survivors to be with their loved ones  during a trial.

Judith G. Olin, Esq., Director of the Lee Gross Anthone Child  Advocacy Center of Child & Adolescent Treatment Services

A WNY mother leading her community in a fight against an accused child sex predator.

Listen and join in the discussion on this important Buffalostyle topic, Tuesday 7-8pm. The studio call in number is 886-9696 or email your questions and comments to buffalostyle@wnymedia.net.

Buffalostyle replay in honor of Independence Day

July 3, 2007

Buffalostyle is taking a leave of absence this Tuesday, but in honor of the 4th, here is the Buffalostyle Memorial Day show. Buffalostyle airs Live every Tuesday at 7pm. See you next Tuesday..

5/24/07:

Buffalostyle Memorial Day Special
With Memorial Day just around the corner, I had the honor of interviewing three war/combat veterans.

Ed Gresco, a soldier from World War II shared some well remebered tales of his combat time in the Phillipines. Ed was the only veteran I could find from that war who was willing to come on the show and talk about his experiences. That fact really impressed upon me the trauma that war creates within those who serve and fight.

Boston Town Clerk Dave Shenk joined me in studio to talk about his service as a medical reservist during both Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dave’s description of his unit’s living conditions in Iraq bordered on unbelieveable, especially when he detailed the bathroom duty that everyone was required to share.

Finishing up the show, New York City Police Officer Chris Reynolds called in and talked about his work at the World Trade Center immediately following 9/11. Chris is a member of my family and it was surprisingly emotional for both of us to share details about the tragedy that we had never before discussed.

Good old fashioned patriotic music helped to set the mood for this show that I dedicated to those who have given of their time, talents and in some cases their lives so that we can enjoy the great luxury of freedom.

Give the show a listen over the Memorial Day Weekend and when you do, remember those who deserve our everlasting gratitude and respect.
