Buffalostyle Ramps Up

March 14, 2007

Went into the purple studio yesterday and checked out the equipment…even engaged in a practice interview with Chris Smith of Buffalo Geek notoriety.

Chris is a very interesting guy and a great interview.  In fact we had such a good time talking that we went 10 minutes without realizing it.

So at the end of last night I had guests, a loosely woven script, some fun program ideas, great music and a dress rehearsal that absolutely confirmed that Buffalostyle is going to be a lot of fun….

Now all I need is you….give a listen at wnymedia.net   ……give a call at 886-WNYM (9696).

It’s all about you, Western New York.

A Stalled Effort

June 25, 2006

After many weeks trying to get Sr. Karen’s Peace Sign’s printed and distributed I find that the effort has basically stalled.

There are a number of reasons for this, one of which is some family health matters that have arisen during the last month that have required the majority of my time and attention.

Another and more significant reason is the lack of response from the community, despite a wide range of media outreach via television, radio, newspapers and blogs.

So at this point I am stepping back from serving as the organizer of the peace signs effort.  I do so after a great deal of thought and reflection and a true sense of regret that I was not able to accomplish my task of raising the funds to create and distribute signs throughout Erie County.

Should anyone wish to take my place, I would be happy to provide you with the information concerning this project to date.  Also, for those who donated via fundable.org, it was only a pledge, not money that was taken and since I did not reach the quota originally set, no money ever changed hands.

I will contact those who send funds to me directly.

Again, I apologize to those who relied on this project and I thank those of you who jumped in and aided the cause.  Perhaps at another time the signs can happen.

Peace Signs Fundraising

May 24, 2006

To all who have written to me or posted on this blog about Sr. Karen’s signs, please keep checking back for updates on the project.

Here are some answers to your questions.

Right now fundable.org is the most efficient means of donating money for the signs.

I am working on aligning with the Bissonette House as a Not For Profit entity that can accept donations via checks.

Ch 7 will have a story about the signs today.  WBFO and WHLD also ran stories today.

Please, if you have any suggestions of businesses who might be interested in aligning with the project, let me know.

Thanks for all of your support.  I will begin posting a list of donors later today.

Non-Violence Signs Update

April 21, 2006

As I wrote earlier this week, I have a goal to put Sr. Karen’s non violence signs on lawns and in windows throughout Erie County as a tribute to this special woman, and also as a means of fostering a stronger more positive mindset within our community against the ravages of violence.

At this point I am working with Sr. Roz at the Bissonette House to organize this project.  She tells me that Sr. Karen created a new sign before her death that she wanted to unveil at some appropriate future moment.  Sadly, it appears as if Sr. Karen’s memorial service will be that moment.

Following the weekend of services and tributes for Sr. Karen, board members of the Bissonette House will meet next week to discuss my sign distribution proposal. At that time it is my hope that they will agree to allow me to print and distribute thousands of Sr. Karen’s new peace sign in the first step of a collective community action to reclaim our neighborhoods and re-establish our reputation as the City of Good Neighbors.

I will continue to write updates as I receive more information.  In the meantime, please say a prayer or do a good deed in memory of Sr. Karen, and for all of us.

Hang in there with me

April 20, 2006

For the last three weeks I have basically been MIA at this blog site. And to anyone who is trying to become a loyal Buffalo WOW reader, I truly apologize.

The truth of the matter is that during this time my father suffered a stroke, I accepted a new job, and it’s spring on the farm, which means an enormous amount of work needs to be done to reclaim the land from its winter hibernation stage.

So not only has my time been impossible to manage, but my energies have been sapped by the wide range of life challenges with which I’ve been dealing and my spirit has been overwhelmed in dealing with the realities of my father’s health.

It’s funny how no matter how convinced one might be of their disconnect from a parent, when a life and death health crisis arrives, it takes all the past and puts it in a new spotlight; one that forces you to consider and reconsider much of the past.

So for anyone who is interested in, or frustrated by, my absence, again, I apologize.  I do not take my relationship with my readers lightly and I certainly care about building a solid relationship with those who find this blog interesting, thought provoking, or simply a way to pass some time.

Please hang in there with me.  I am slowly making my way back into the blogosphere.

The Perfect Song

April 6, 2006

My daughter gave me a new CD of music for when I walk and one of the songs is the absolute perfect anthem for writers.

It’s titled, “Unwritten,” and the artist who performs the song so perfectly is Natasha Bettenfield.

Check out the chorus:

“Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins.”

Just makes you want to write….

Sad News in the News

March 13, 2006

Seems as if there’s been a lot of sad news stories lately.

Out here in Eden, last week a young high school student was tragically killed in a snowmobile accident.

Then came the news of New York State Assemblywoman Sandra Lee Wirth’s passing.

And now today, the story about Buffalo Sabres Coach Lindy Ruff’s daughter and the discovery of a growth on her brain.

Further tests are scheduled for later this week.  Let’s hope those tests provide good news and  break the chain of sad endings.

WNY Radio and WNY Women

March 4, 2006

For quite a few years now I have been actively voicing my opinion that more women need to be heard on local talk radio.

Finally last year, WBEN AM 930 added Kathy Weppner and her Straight Talk Show and now WHLD is showcasing Judith Einach.

Judy was a candidate for Mayor last year and we met at several campaign related social events as well as at a media training session I taught for the YWCA Leadership Institute.

I like Judy particularly because she has a very positive attitude about Buffalo’s future.

So I was pleased when she asked me to guest on her radio show next Saturday.  We’ll be talking about women in media with special attention given to the world of bloggers.

Tune in and/or call in next Sat at 8am… or if you like to sleep in on the weekend you can download the show for later listening at www.einachreport.wnymedia.com

TGIF

March 3, 2006

Looking forward to the weekend.

Today is about attending the Working for Downtown Lunch focused on waterfront and Erie Canal development.  Brian Higgins and Larry Quinn are two of the guest speakers and I am hopeful about the message that they will deliver today.

Then it’s back to the real world task of cleaning the house before I kick back and relax tonight with my husband.

Tomorrow is all about working on my new book and enjoying a lunch with a young woman who used to work for me.

She is divorced and raising two children on her own.  It’s a challenging life, but regardless, she still is going after her own dreams while keeping her children’s lives in order.   A tough task and one for which I admire her greatly.

Then Sunday is all about First Sunday….a dinner tradition that my husband and I started right after 9/11 as a way to stay connected to family and friends on a regular basis.

The first Sunday of each month we basically host an open house for invited family and friends.  We never know who is going to show up or what dish they will bring to pass.

What is guaranteed, however, is an afternoon of laughter, fun and reconnection with those we love.

All in all, good ways to spend the final cold days of winter.
