The Re-Greening of Buffalo—Buffalostyle Take Seven

              Many areas in Western New York are currently undergoing transformations that are dramatically changing and improving the face of our community.  Even more encouraging is the fact that these changes are often happening within the some of the Queen City’s most neglected neighborhoods. 
 

    As these progressive evolutions occur, partnerships are developing among those fostering the various changes.  These alliances, in turn, are encouraging projects beyond the realm of everyday urban planning and possibilities.
 

     This Friday on Buffalostyle, I will feature members of three different WNY organizations who have independently undertaken some of these outside the box projects.
 

David Lanfear, of Bale on Bale Construction and architect Kevin Connors of Kevin Connors and Associates are partnering with University of Buffalo architecture students in designing and building a community greenhouse on Buffalo’s West Side.  Their purpose is to aide in the re-greening and rebirth of Buffalo’s inner city, and what sets their project apart is that the greenhouse is constructed of straw bales
 

Diane Picard is the Growing Green Program Director for the Massachusetts
Avenue Project (MAP).  Map is the organization that will oversee activities in the straw bale greenhouse with the intent of growing a diverse and equitable community food system to promote local economic opportunities, access to affordable, nutritious food, and social-change education.

 

     Together with supportive sponsors such as Cornell Cooperative Extension, these three people are merging their independent talents and visions to affect a resurgent greening of Buffalo, and a rejuvenation of the Queen City’s inner neighborhoods.  They are what Buffalostyle is all about.

 

Adding to Buffalostyle’s guest roster this week will be Cheektowaga native Lisa Barrett.  Lisa is a country western singer/songwriter who definitely shines a bright star on our community.  She recently completed her first CD entitled, When You Look At Me, and the only thing more impressive than this young woman’s singing/songwriting talents is the reason she got started.
